Manfred Deix

Caricaturist, illustrator and cartoonist... painter as well as writer. Moreover, Manfred Deix is a musician and crime author. As early as the age of three he paints on all kinds of plastic bags he can get his hands on.

His Life

Manfred Deix was born in the Lower Austrian town of St. Pölten in 1949 the second child of Johanna and Franz Deix. Later the family moves to Böheimkirchen, where his parents take over the “Blue Grape” pub. From 1955 as a schoolboy at the Daniel Gran Elementary School he experiences early success with the first sales of nude drawings "to the more curious of the fellow pupils". But after one year at vocational school his gift is all too obvious, and he switches to a finishing school in St. Pölten. When he hears about the “Graphic” in Vienna, he enrolls there in 1965. After 2.5 years Deix is thrown out of school for cutting classes. Afterwards he studies for 14 semesters at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. However, he never finishes his studies. In 1984 he marries his longtime girlfriend Marietta in Las Vegas. In the US he gets to know Hans Traxler, Chlodwig Poth, F.K. Waechter and Robert Gernhardt, painters/caricaturists of the satirical magazine Titanic, personally. Due to his excessive way of living, Deix has a pulmonary infarct in 1988. After his stay at the clinic he moves to Weidling. Seven years later breakdown due to alcohol. Nowadays Deix lives with his wife and numerous cats in the surroundings of Vienna.
