Waidhofen/Ybbs - A Town of Towers

Since 1896 Waidhofen an der Ybbs (12 000 inhabitants) has been a town with an own statute. It has a size of 131 km². The most interesting sight of Waidhofen is the historic town center itself. Magnificent town houses (most of them are built in gothic style) are situated at Oberer and Unterer Stadtplatz, Freisingerberg and Hoher Markt. The oldest element of the town is the northern part of the Oberer Stadtplatz, near the castle and the Parish Church.

Attractions of Waidhofen an der Ybbs

Parish Church

The church dedicated to Saint Magdalena and Saint Lambert dates back to the 15th century. The Gothic church was partly changed in Baroque style and houses a winged altarpiece (around 1500), Gothic plastic arts and wonderful glass windows from after World War II.

Rothschild Castle

The medieval fortress was reshaped 1885-87 by the Viennese architect Friedrich von Schmidt.

In 1875 Baron Rothschild bought the castle which passed into the possession of the Österreichischen Bundesforste after World War II.

Hospic Church

The church is the second Gothic church of the town.
Tradition has it that around 1274 a hospital for citizens with a church was built outside the southern town gate. Whether that first building was actually erected in 1274 cannot be verified. The present church is not the original church. It has two naves. The main nave with a polygonal chair is the oldest part of the church. The right nave was added later. Simple pillars carry the vaults of both naves. The church also houses the oldest of Waidhofen`s Christmas crèches, which has grown throughout the centuries and has constantly been supplemented and renewed.

Ybbs Tower

An exhibition of a particular kind makes it possible for visitors to dive into a world of senses.
You yourself determine the course of your journey. Especially the three–dimensional impressions of sound, the magic fountain and the mysterious tower–chamber promise an unparalleled adventure for the whole family.

Exhibitions
Lower Austria Regional Exhibition 2007

"Fire & Earth" until 4 November 2007

Two elements stand in the center of the exhibitions: fire and earth. Both elements are of basic meaning for mankind and civilisation, good and evil, profitable and destructive at the same time.

Fire and earth are presented side by side at two places of exhibition in the Mostviertel, Waidhofen/Ybbs at the Eisenstraße and St. Peter/Au at the Mostraße. An exciting wide arch leads the vistitors through periods and cults, from mythology up to modern art.

The Mostviertel is the ideal scenery as these two elements determine life and property of the region. Earth as fertile soil for thousands of perry pear trees south of the Danube, fire, the prerequisite for iron work and the art of forging in the Mostviertel.
